Brighton manager Dario Vidošić ‘proud’ despite defeat

Dario Vidošić’s side fought valiantly at the Emirates Stadium but failed to produce a response as Arsenal proved 1-0 victors.

Fine margins has quickly become a recurring theme to Brighton’s season, with the Seagulls recently experiencing both the highs and lows that come with falling on either side of a narrow scoreline.

While the Seagulls looked to be sitting pretty in sixth in the Women’s Super League (WSL) table after clinching a 1-0 victory over Everton, an away trip to Brisbane Road soon saw Brighton reap the same result but in favour of their Tottenham Hotspur opponents.

Vidošić was quick to express his regret at his side squandering several opportunities in the second half, along with a trio of contentious penalty decisions which went against the visitors.

While the Brighton manager again lamented his side’s misfortune as an own-goal from Marisa Olislagers proved Arsenal’s matchwinner at the Emirates, Vidošić also expressed the immense pride he felt toward his players.

“We didn’t get enough control early and that led them to start dominating the game a little bit, but I thought we defended well…

“It does feel like a very unfortunate goal to concede but look that’s football, that can happen.”

“I feel really, really proud. We created a lot but I think in the last 30, 40 minutes it was just fatigue that got the better of us after a really tough week and a very thin squad.”

Going into the contest in the capital, Brighton were without two of their regular starters in forwards Michelle Agyemang and Rosa Kafaji, with both ineligible to play due to their Arsenal loanee statuses.

Twenty-year-old striker Carla Camacho stepped up admirably, however, in Agyemang’s absence and was only to be denied her first WSL goal by an outstanding, fingertip save from Daphne van Domselaar.

The diving stop was what arguably awarded the Arsenal goalkeeper the Player of the Match award at full time, with Vidošić commenting: “(Carla was) very, very good. You get your first start and you get one day to prepare for it, to watch and to learn after the League Cup game.

“She’s a high potential player, very similar to Mich (Michelle Agyemang) where she just needs time… I think experiences like today will help her learn so much about how to deal with different actions and different scenarios.”

The striker will look to help Brighton get back to winning ways when they host Southampton in the League Cup next Sunday, with Camacho recording two goals in the competition to date.
